MEMBERSHIP MEETINGS

Redwood Region Ornithological Society holds monthly membership meetings on the second Wednesday of each month between September and May. The September and May meetings are normally pot luck picnics. The rest of the meetings usually contain programs by members or non-member speakers on ornithological topics. We gather at 7:00 pm in the Fellowship Room of the First United Methodist Church, 1551 Montgomery, Santa Rosa. The Fellowship Room is located at the west (left when facing the church) end of the church.

As of October 2020, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, RROS began to hold virtual membership meetings streamed on Zoom. After the pandemic calmed, RROS established hybrid Zoom and in-person meetings. Starting in the 2024-25 season, RROS will be minimizing the number of hybrid meetings and will focus on either in-person or pure Zoom meetings, as is appropriate for the presentation. An attempt will be made to record all programs so that they can be viewed online. Watch the most recent program immediately below:

Ruthie Rudesill and Bob Hasenick share their findings on many topics relating to bird vocalizations.

January 2023: Julie Woodruff, will give the preliminary results of the study and plans for additional data collection and regional collaboration that is needed to fully understand the species’ stopover use and scale of migration.

December 2023: RROS Members Zoomed to the Sharing Event

November 2023: Arthur Dawson spoke on Vegetation Trends and Cycles in the Fire-Prone Landscapes of Sonoma, Lake and Napa Counties.

October 2023: Dr. Dan Levitis of Sonoma Ecology Center told us how asexual reproduction works in primarily sexual lineages, why it likely fails most of the time, why it persists anyway, and what is known about the few documented instances of avian clonality, including a rare and iconic California bird.

April 2023: Birding’s Positive Impact on Mental Health, by Frank Davis, Ph.D.

March 2023: Project Interpreter Marisela De Santa Anna described for us the birds and other wildlife of The Willits Bypass Mitigation Lands, the largest public wetlands restoration and mitigation project in the State of California.

February 2023: Bob and Carol Hasenick share their trip to Panama.

January 2023: Four RROS couples regaled us with reports of birding and travels in Colombia.

November 2022: Bonnie Lewkowicz, Judith Smith and Susan Glass share their experiences as wheelchair using birders. Hear what they and others need and appreciate from the birding community and locations to feel welcome, included, and able to access birding activities.

October 2022: Lisa Hug, a North Bay bird specialist, provides a delightful overview of and tips for the challenge of identifying glorious gulls in the winter.
